In YWCA ITTM, one of the youth centres in Tuen Mun, 9 girls joined the Maker Programs under the YouthCreate Program. At the beginning, they know nothing about woodworking, sewing and laser cutting etc. Since they joined this program, they learnt together with social workers to build maker skills through doing various projects. One of their project is an angry bird shooting game. That was the first time they build such a big toy from scratch. The game was also exhibited in the Maker Faire in February. People like the game!
It was a success and their confidence slowly build up. In another faire, they want to challenge themselves to make a scooters.
Stage 1 - Design and Prototyping
To start with, the youths made some design sketch with dimensions and make some prototypes.
We did some online search for inspirations. We found some cool and smart designs. These designs open up our imaginations and we learnt from them.
After having some discussion, we decided to make 4 scooters. Two for adults and two for kids with two different scooter design.
Since this is the first time we build a scooter, we did some testing to get the most suitable dimension.
Stage 2 - Shopping!
We went and grab the materials. At the beginning youths were afraid of the shop keeper, because he yelled at them. But they became brave after visiting more shops.
Stage 3 - Build!
Let's get started! First we got the wheels from the moving dolly!
Then measure the wood, cut it and sand it.
Stage 4 - Testing
User test and feedback from kids
Continue assemble the scooter.
Phew! we done all the major building, What's next? Put on decoration!
Bring them to maker faire!
