Talk: "Energy Autonomous Flexible Robots" by Dr Hemma Philamore, Oct 31 at MakerBay Tsuen Wan, Nov 11 at HKU

Poster by Anthony Cheuk Wang Time Session 1: October 31st, 17:30 - 19:00 Location: MakerBay Tsuen Wan, 23 Mei Wan Street, Tsuen wan Time Session 2: November 11th 14:30-15:30 Location: The University of Hong Kong, Knowles Building, Room KB730  We present an energetically autonomous robotic tadpole that uses a single membrane component for both electrical energy generation and propulsive actuation. The coupling of this small bio-inspired power source to a bio-inspired actuator demonstrates the first-generation design for an energetically autonomous swimming robot consisting of a single membrane. An ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) with a Nafion polymer layer is demonstrated in a...

Plankton and Plastic Ocean Expedition

Written by Maria Li We worked with the students of the Lingnan University on a Plankton and Plastic Ocean Expedition. Over 1 day boat trip in Sai Kung, students learned about Citizen Science Biology Bamboo spitting Scientific Tool Design Rapid Prototyping and Team working Leadership Creativity First, see the results: some creative designs and interesting observations! Only in one day! By students with almost no prior experience. Well done ladies and gents.   Find out more detailed documentation from our instructables:  https://www.instructables.com/id/Plankton-Microplastic-Drag-Net/ We encourage the use of eco materials such as bamboo to make the net design.   We found 2-3 zooplanktons. We took...

Reflection By Fergus - Summer Intern 2017

By being a summer intern in Makerbay, the experience was totally different than expected. For an intern, one would expect doing repetitive jobs, like helping in photocopying, but in Makerbay, I was to take on a whole project and to finish it for selling with support from members of Makerbay. I have never seen any company giving so much responsibility to an intern to develop their skills in the working environment. Makerbay is a makerspace in the heart of Hong Kong with great space, tools and maker community. They have all the tools that a normal maker would need, ranging...
