WWF Hong Kong and MakerBay are developing a sensor network to understand how trash moves from the street side, into the drain, into rivers, estuaries and the ocean. The network comprises of about 100 tracking devices - round shaped ocean drifters. The devices are GPS enabled and send their locations via 3G network, which is then aggregated and displayed on an online map. Amazing mother and environmentalist Jo Wilson teaches her kids maths by collecting cigarette butts on their local beach, counting and doing some calculation. Together with the villagers of Yung Shue Wan Beach (Hong Kong) they collected: 2119 butts (in a day!), that's... 106 packets 6254 HKD 3,178,500 HKD of unpaid fines for littering The kids are rather unimpressed with the adults littering their beach but impressed how much fine it could represent - if the law was enforced.
