Just reach out to us and we will figure out the dates, size of the group and all! Happy playing and learning summer at MakerBay!

Stamford American School Hong Kong is a proud supporter of MakerBay Summer Camps.

Hands-on STEM!

Who said science has to be boring?! Not at all! During this intensely fun week of hands-on making, participants would learn a whole lot of physics, mathematics, geometry, but also structure engineering, mechanics, aerodynamics, knowledge of materials, woodwork and more. Advanced concepts are best conveyed with real-world experiments.

Students will work in groups and independently to design, build, test and document: unpowered racing cars, tall towers, long bridge and make complex chain reaction models.
Every time, students will be able to use their creativity to learn science in a way that is personal yet universal. This workshop will combine 21st-century skills with STEAM and traditional craftsmanship. All-around awesome!

The Fabulous STEM Orchestra

Music connects with people of every age and culture. It can be a unifying force in any makerspace, bringing people together to celebrate creativity and community. When young people engage in making music, they have opportunities for deep learning. Musicians are necessarily creative, collaborative, and iterative in their work. Combining traditional making and creating music is a great maker activity. This camp gives students hands-on experience with traditional maker tools to work with materials such as PVC pipe, metal, and wood. Students will apply the making skills they learned and the physics of music to make their own musical instruments. The workshop will involve a lot of creative use of tools and materials. Come to learn to make and compose music!

The Learning Robot

STEM skills are vital for success in tomorrow's world. Summer STEM camp will teach your child essential robotic, electronics and coding skills. We will build incrementally more challenging robots while having fun. The workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to machine learning as students will train their robots to learn to recognize different shapes, colors, objects, collaborate, interact with each other. Part of the workshop will be rather structured while other parts will provide space for creativity, experimentation, and exploration. In a future where AI and robotics will increase in influence, what will be your relationship to these technologies? Will you be a consumer? Or will you be a creator?
"One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.Elbert Hubbard.
At the end of the workshop, you will get to keep the machine learning-equipped robot and continue to experiment and play as much as you want!

Racing Drone Camp

Autonomous and flying cars are not yet common - but they're coming! Drone racing has got to be one of the most adrenaline-inducing motorsport out there. Not only it is thrilling and difficult to master piloting, but building your first drone with your own hands is a powerful way to learn STEM subjects, dabbling with electronics, sensor technology, embedded computing, coding. This workshop is aimed at beginners that want to understand the technology to acquire a solid foundation in drone technology, to go further. We will take you from scratch to flying in just a weekend. You can keep the drone you built to keep practicing flying and expand your creation.

Citizen Science Camp, "The Visible"

Worried about too much screen time for your kids? Sign them up for Citizen Science Camp to get them away from their screen and into nature. During a week your kids will learn about local and global environmental issues, be active citizen scientists collecting environmental data, analyzing and contributing to improving the environment. We will use aerial photography to map areas of Hong Kong that suffer pollution, map coral reefs with cutting-edge aquatic drones and lastly, we will use microscopy to study biodiversity around us. The students will develop a greater appreciation for their environment while developing technological skills in groups. About half of the time will be spent in the lab and the other half in the field. This is a perfect camp for the students that want to explore today world's issues and become the heroes of tomorrow.

During a week your kids will learn about local and global environmental issues, be active citizen scientists collecting environmental data, analyzing and contributing to improving the environment. We will build our own spectrometer to analyze food, water, and other substance. We will learn to map the invisible: environmental radioactivity and be introduced to renewable energies. Participants will develop a greater appreciation for their environment while developing technological skills in groups. About half of the time will be spent in the lab and the other half in the field. This is a perfect camp for the students that want to explore today world's issues and become the heroes of tomorrow.

Glass Camp: Science and Craft pt 1

Ever wondered how glass is made? Discover the wonder material that propelled science and technology with the creation of telescopes, microscopes, test tubes and microchips. Glass goes largely unnoticed in our every day lives and is often discarded without a second thought. In Hong Kong, we discard tonnes every day! In this course, we will discover how glass is made from simple raw materials. With a focus on recycling and upcycling, students will experience how glass can be melted and shaped when hot or cut, polished and engraved cold. Participants will craft their own unique recycled glass artworks by applying their new found skills and knowledge.

Glass Camp: Science and Craft pt 2

This course (part 2) delves deeper into the mysteries of glass materials and craft. Students will gain more experience with specialized glass tools and equipment in order to hone their skills to produce individual art projects. Practical skills will include both hot and cold glass techniques. Please note that Glass Making Part 1 is a prerequisite (unless by special request).
