Millions in the world suffer from different forms of health problem due to prolonged sitting, you might be one of them yourself. With prolonged sitting has been linked to:
  • Heart problems and cancer risks: 24 percent more likely to develop colon cancer and a 32 percent higher risk for endometrial cancer
  • Weak muscles: poor circulation in your legs which can cause muscle fibers to break down
  • Back and neck pain: compression of certain disks in the lower back and may lead to disk degeneration over time
  • Brain: reduces fresh blood and oxygen and slow down in brain function

Did you know?

  • Health guidelines suggest we should spend 150 minutes a week in moderate exercise, but many of us sit down for more than half the working day – phones and email mean we don’t even have to get up to talk to someone

  • Hong Kong employees have clocked up 50.1 hours each week, mostly sitting in the office, the highest among 71 cities in a survey conducted in 2016

  • A study shows that 80% of the interviewed children from underprivileged backgrounds in Hong Kong suffer from some form of spinal problem

Standing instead of sitting at your desk can help keep your body and mind active while working or studying is one of the ways to reduce health related problem due to prolonged sitting

Your Mission

Design a standing desk that is affordable and suitable for
  • A typical local school in Hong Kong (appr. 500 sq feet for 30 students), or
  • A 500 sq feet apartment for a 3-member family, or
  • Offices in Hong Kong

    Who should join?

    • Passionate in improving wellness and health using your design talent
    • Individual/team (up to two members) with proven experience in design work

    Judging Criteria

  • Creativity: Innovative design and new application capability
  • Aesthetic quality: Is the desk pleasant to look at?
  • Functionality: Does it serve the purpose of being a standing desk, e.g. adjustable, easy to use, portable
  • Market potential: Is the design cost efficient? Is it scalable?
  • Sustainability: Does the design make use of sustainable material for the desk as well as packaging? Ease to repair and recycle?
  • Public voting: Finalists will see their desk displayed in various locations in Hong Kong for public voting

    Grand Prize
    • Full funding support from Keep Moving Project to finalise design, manufacture and market the Standing Desk

    Save the dates

    • 4 - 5 Nov Design Weekend: Meet the expert and produce first prototype
    • 6 - 26 Nov Prototype and build! Yes you have to build the actual desk
    • 2 Dec Present your desk to the judging panel, top 5 will be selected for public voting
    • December Public Voting:
      • 8 - 10 December: PMQ, Central
      • 11 - 14 December: Nanfang Tower, Sheung Wan
      • 15 - 22 December: Tseng Kwan O plaza
    • End of December: Announcement of Winner
    • Spring 2018: Finalisation of winning design and commencement of production

    The Keep Moving Project is a multi-faceted non-profit based in Hong Kong that is focused on spreading health and wellness in ways that are easy to implement and affordable to anyone.  We believe that health is a necessity and not a luxury available only for those lucky enough to have it.  By participating in this project, you are helping pave the way for a happier and healthier Hong Kong.
